- What is Action Research?
- Action Research refers to a wide variety of evaluative , investigative, and analytical research methods designed to diagnose problems or weaknesses whether organizational, academic, or instructional and help educators develop practical solutions to address them quickly and efficiently. Action Research may also be applied to programs or educational tecniques that are not necessarily experiencing any problems, but that educators simply want to learn more about and improve. Thr general goal is to create a simple, practical, repeatable process of iterative learning, evalution, and improvement that leads to increasingly better result for school, teachers, or programs.
- The goal is to address practical problem in a specific school or classroom, rather than proceduce independently validated and reproducible findings that others, outside of the context being studied, can use to guide their future actions or inform the design of academic programs. While action research is typically focused on solving a specific problem or a specific question. Action research can also make meaningful contributions to the larger body of knowledge and understanding in the feild of education, particularly within a relatively closed system such as school, academics, institutes , or network of connected organizations.
- At some point , teachersvand instructors will come across some form of problem that they would like to address in their classroom or course. Some teachers will rely on traditional ways to solve these problems. Teachers will also seek out the advice of experts or colleagues to try and address challenges. Good educators will conduct their own investigation about their school and learning environment. These learning environments, or a hybrid mix of thr two.
- Action is either research initiated to solve an immediate problem or a reflective process of progressive problem solving that integrates research, action, and analysis. The integration of action includes the development and implementation of a plan or strategy to address the focus of the research. The research includes building a knowledge base to understand the effectiveness of action or plan being considered. In simple words action research can be viewed as a form of disciplined inquiry utilized by teachers, instructors, and supervisors to better understand student learning and teacher effectiveness.
- These seven steps, which become an endless cycle for the inquiring teacher, are the following:
- Selecting a problem
- Clarifying theories
- Identifying research questions
- Collecting data
- Analyzing data
- Reporting results
- Taking informed action
